About Our Portfolio

NeurogesX is a biopharmaceutical company focused on developing and commercializing novel pain management therapies based on known chemical entities. Our initial focus is on chronic peripheral neuropathic pain, which includes the conditions of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), painful HIV-distal sensory polyneuropathy (HIV-DSP), and painful diabetic neuropathy (PDN).

Our lead product, Qutenza® (capsaicin) 8% patch, is a dermal delivery system containing a prescription strength capsaicin. Qutenza which was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in November 2009 for the management of pain associated with PHN and by the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) in May 2009 Qutenza is also being investigated for other indications.

In addition to Qutenza, we are developing NGX-1998, a non-patch liquid formulation of the same active ingredient (capsaicin) used in Qutenza. NGX-1998 is being designed to treat neuropathic pain conditions such as postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). NGX-1998 has completed three Phase 1 studies.

Our pre-clinical pipeline consists of two prodrug programs in which we modify the chemical make-up of well known, currently used drugs to improve their safety, efficacy and/or potential usefulness in the management of pain. We have conducted preclinical evaluations of one opioid prodrug compound (NGX-6052) and three acetaminophen prodrugs (NGX-5752, NGX-9674 and NGX-1576) and we are currently seeking development partners for these programs.

The table below summarizes the status of our product and product candidates.

NEUROGESX INVESTIGATIONAL PRODUCT PIPELINE

NeurogesX Pipeline

Qutenza is approved in the United States for the management of pain associated with PHN.

In clinical trials, the most common adverse reactions were application-site redness, pain, itching, and papules. The majority of these reactions were transient and self-limited. Serious adverse reactions included application site pain and increased blood pressure. Blood pressure increases during or shortly after Qutenza treatment were on average less than 10 mm Hg, although some patients had greater increases and these changes lasted for approximately 2 hours after patch removal. Increases in blood pressure were unrelated to the pre-treatment blood pressure but were related to treatment-related increases in pain.
