NeurogesX is a biopharmaceutical company focused on developing and commercializing novel pain management therapies. Our initial focus is on chronic peripheral neuropathic pain, which includes the conditions of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), painful HIV-distal sensory polyneuropathy (HIV-DSP), and painful diabetic neuropathy (PDN) and potentially other neuropathic pain indications.

Qutenza® (capsaicin) 8% patch, is a dermal delivery system containing a prescription strength of capsaicin that is currently approved in the United States for the management of pain associated with PHN and the European Union.

In clinical trials, the most common adverse reactions were application-site redness, pain, itching, and papules. The majority of these reactions were transient and self-limited. Serious adverse reactions included application site pain and increased blood pressure. Blood pressure increases during or shortly after Qutenza treatment were on average less than 10 mm Hg, although some patients had greater increases and these changes lasted for approximately 2 hours after patch removal. Increases in blood pressure were unrelated to the pre-treatment blood pressure but were related to treatment-related increases in pain.

NGX-1998, a dermal liquid formulation of prescription strength capsaicin is being developed to provide rapid, localized and sustained pain relief to treat peripheral neuropathic pain conditions such as PHN. We have filed an Investigational New Drug application (IND) for NGX-1998 and completed three Phase 1 studies.

In addition, we have conducted preclinical evaluations for an opioid prodrug program and an analgesic prodrug program for managing additional chronic and acute pain conditions.
